Durkan Fencing Camp is licensed and inspected by the NJ DOH.

Our coaches specialize in Fencing Camps! Detailed instruction guaranteed to improve fencing skills including: footwork, bladework, fencing bout tactics, physical conditioning, and mental training.

The Daily Camp Schedule includes: footwork, conditioning, strength training, drills and structured bouting in our 15,000 sqft fully air conditioned and heated gym featuring 20 FIE Competitive Fencing Strips. (Click below for detailed schedule)

FENCING CAMP FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

• How is your camp different from other camps?

  • Our camp is built around the goal of making EVERY student become a better fencer. Whether you are new to the sport or a Top Nationally Ranked fencer our experienced coaching team is dedicated to providing detailed, clear instruction tailored to your needs. Our campers consistently report that they learn new technical and tactical skills, improve physical and mental conditioning, feel more confident as a fencer, and achieve a deeper understanding about “what is happening” during a bout so that they can effectively control their opponents after attending our camps. This is the perfect opportunity if you want better fencing results or if you’ve ever lost a bout and don’t understand what happened or what you could have done to win.

• Do I need to bring a lunch?

  • Lunches are provided. Lunches are usually “kid friendly” food such as chicken tenders with French fries, pasta, pizza, hot dogs/hamburgers, sandwiches. Vegetarian options are available, if you have special dietary needs you are welcome to bring your own lunch/snacks. We have a refrigerator and microwave available. Gatorade is also provided as is cold, filtered water from our touch-free bottle-filler water fountain.

• What are the ages of your fencers at camp?

  • Our campers range from ages 8 to 24, and the vast majority are experienced High School aged fencers (13 to 18 years-old). Young children will work in a small group with a dedicated coach, when appropriate, and we also allow competitive youth fencers to be challenged by bouting older and more experienced fencers. Our coaches are happy to speak to you if you have specific question about your child’s age and level.

• What if my child is a beginner?

  • WE LOVE BEGINNERS! Camp is the PERFECT way to introduce a new student to the sport of fencing, and our coaches have years of experience with beginner camps. We have a dedicated coach work with age-appropriate fundamentals and introduce bouting when the camper is ready. A clean/sanitized set of equipment will be provided to your child for the week or you can take advantage of our beginner’s equipment discounts to get a complete fencing set you can keep.

• Is fencing safe?

  • Fencing is one of the safest sports for your child with lower incidence of knee and ankle injury than soccer and lower concussion risk than swimming!! We take safety seriously: our coaches are CPR/AED and First Aid certified and we have an on site medical director. We have a fully stocked first aid kit, in compliance with New Jersey Department of Health youth camp regulations.

• Is your club air conditioned?

  • YES! Our facility is 100% climate controlled with Air Conditioning and heating throughout the building.

• What are the camp hours?

  • Camp is 9am to 4pm daily. Early drop-off and late pick-up is available.

• How much bouting time is there at camp?

  • Camp provides ample opportunity for bouting new and challenging fencers, but it is always structured and with coaches providing valuable feeding back. We estimate at least two hours minimum bouting time at any week of camp (with less for bouting for brand new beginners!) Bouting at camp should be focused on developing specific offensive and defensive tactics and techniques — so you understand how and why you win (or lose) each touch.
